Experiments in Active Learning in Genetics Classes
Susan Strome is a Distinguished Professor of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at UC Santa Cruz. Her research lab investigates the molecular mechanisms used by germ cells to establish and maintain their identity, immortality, and totipotency.
Susan will discuss some strategies for engaging students in active learning classes. She teaches Genetics to mainly juniors at UC Santa Cruz, and in that class has introduced strategies developed during an intensive teaching workshop at Indiana University and inspired by participation in one of the Summer Institutes on Undergraduate Education in Biology. She will share and discuss ideas for group work and student activities during class sessions and assessment of learning outcomes.
